After a longer flight from Papeete over the Tuamotu Islands we landed in Fakarava, one of the most isolated and beautiful Atolls in Polynesia.
An atoll is a volcanic island with a ring of coral around it, the volacano of millions of years collapese back into the sea leaving a ring of coral island around a perfect lagoon, it is in a sence a sea within a sea.
We decidedto stay in Pension Paparava, here we found reasonably priced bungalows by the sea, after all we cannot go to French polynesia without staying in a bungalow by the sea!
It was amazing a nice bed, right on the beach and views of the crystal clear blue turquise water filled with coral and the most amazing array of multicoloured fish you could ever imagine!
Fakarava also has the widest pass with the strongest currents in all of Poloneysia and the second largest in the world. It is one of the most adrenaline pumping diving sight in the world. Digby really enjoyed it, being swept along by 6 knot currents it is as if flying at 30m deep you are whipped past a wall of sharks 100-200 atleast. Only small ones 1-2m but none the less increadibly impressive. Another day Digby was lucky enough to encounter aphenominen that occurs maybe every 3 years here, he saw a whale shark. A small one at only 9 meters he first thought it was a boat above him!
Island life is laid back and relaxed, a coconut smashes into the ground 30cm from our heads was the only mildly stresful moment. If you dont like fish don't come here. The island is isolated and is serviced once a week by cargo ship (weather permitting) everything imported is expensive so every go's fishing and eats fish. Don't ask for meat as 9 times out of 10 you will be served dog, as there are quite a few dogs on the island but no cows. The locals say it is tasty, we decided not to find out.
All to quickly our time here seemed to be over and it was time to leave, with tears in our eye's and flower necklaces around our necks filling our noses with the sweet floral smell of paradise we had to leave...
The islands here in the middle of the pacific were perhaps the most expensive days our our year long trip. Using up 1/9 of our total budget for the year in just 10 days, but it really was worth every penny and we would do it all again and then some without a shadow of a doubt!
All the best from Paradise!
